Gary Ashford

Gary Ashford is a highly regarded international tax professional with extensive experience gained at HM Revenue & Customs (HMRC) and leading advisory and accountancy firms in the United Kingdom.

Throughout his career, he has held senior positions at HMRC, Ernst & Young, Grant Thornton, RSM Tenon, Kinetic Partners and Harbottle & Lewis, developing particular expertise in international taxation, tax investigations and the management of complex tax disputes.

His practice focuses on advising private clients, entrepreneurial families, trusts, investment funds and international corporate groups on cross-border taxation, international tax planning, voluntary disclosures and tax risk management. He has significant experience assisting taxpayers involved in HMRC enquiries, tax investigations and matters relating to international structures and offshore wealth.

Gary regularly advises High Net Worth Individuals (HNWIs), trusts and international businesses on issues relating to tax transparency, exchange of information, economic substance requirements, OECD BEPS initiatives, non-domicile taxation, transfer pricing and wealth-related tax matters.

Alongside his professional practice, Gary is an author for Bloomsbury, a lecturer on international tax matters and an active participant in consultations between the tax profession, HMRC and HM Treasury.

He served as President of the Chartered Institute of Taxation (CIOT) in 2023–2024 and was a member of the CIOT Governing Council from 2011 to 2025.

During this period, he chaired both the Management of Taxes Committee and the Crypto and Digital Assets Committee, demonstrating expertise in both traditional and emerging areas of taxation.

He also served as Vice President of CFE Tax Advisers Europe and is currently a member of the International Private Client Committee.

Gary is a Fellow of the CIOT and a member of STEP, two of the most respected professional bodies in the fields of taxation, trusts and estate planning.
